Autumn, also known as fall in some countries, is a season full of colour, change, and cozy feelings. We have just entered that cozy, colourful season that falls between summer and winter and so, it's time to get cozy and enjoy those autumn days. In many countries around the world, the weather becomes cooler, and the air feels fresh. People start wearing warmer clothes like jumpers, scarves, and boots. The sky often looks soft and grey, and the wind carries the smell of dry leaves. Even here in Dubai, people start to enjoy the cooler days and head back out into the city for days at the beach and walks in the park, once the summer days are behind them.

One of the most beautiful things about a western autumn is the changing leaves. Honestly this is my favourite part. So much so, a much younger me, long before my days as an English Teacher and literary lover, wrote a poem about the leaves changing and the beautiful colours of autumn. A poem my family and I can still recite today almost word for word. Trees that were once green in summer turn red, orange, yellow, and brown. Parks and streets become colorful, and many people enjoy walking outside to see the leaves. One of my favourite things to do as a child in autumn, was to jump into piles of leaves, or hear them crunch beneath my feet as I stepped on them. These days, I love to take photos of the beautiful scenery, the way the low light hits the trees, or sit by a cozy fire on a cool, autumnal evening. It gets pretty cool this time of year where I grew up.

Let's not forget that Autumn is also a time for harvest. Farmers collect crops like apples, pumpkins, corn, squash and a British favourite, potatoes. These foods are used in many seasonal dishes. People bake apple pies, make pumpkin soup, and roast vegetables. A family favourite where I grew up is for people to visit local farms to pick apples or choose pumpkins to carve for decoration.

Many countries celebrate festivals in autumn. In the United States and Canada, people celebrate Thanksgiving. It is a holiday where families come together to share a big meal and give thanks for what they have. In other countries, The UK included, there are harvest festivals to celebrate the end of the growing season. These events often include music, dancing, and traditional food. Another favourite of mine is Bonfire night. A traditional British holiday where we have fireworks, rich, warm food and family gatherings around a bonfire to celebrate Guy Fawkes' failed attack on parliament many years ago.

Last but not least, many animals also prepare for winter during autumn. Birds fly to warmer places, a journey called migration. Squirrels collect nuts and store them for the cold months. Bears eat a lot of food to get ready for hibernation. Nature is busy during this time, getting ready for the quiet of winter.

Autumn is a season that reminds us to slow down and enjoy the little things. So sit back with a warm drink like tea, coffee, or hot chocolate, light the fire or get a cozy blanket and enjoy. Many people light candles, read books, and spend time indoors with family and friends. The world outside may be changing, but inside, everything feels calm and peaceful.
