Around the World in One Breakfast

ree

There’s something magical about mornings. As the sun rises, its golden light dances across the room, and the world stirs to life with the rustle of leaves and birds chirping. Somewhere, someone is preparing breakfast, a ritual that connects us all in starting anew. No matter your routine, breakfast serves as an essential start to the day, providing the energy and nutrients needed to fuel our activities. It’s a moment of connection, whether shared with family or enjoyed in solitude, allowing us to reflect and prepare for the day ahead. However, this morning meal varies widely by culture.

TOKYO
TOKYO

In Tokyo, the day might begin with a quiet bowl of miso soup, steamed rice, and grilled fish. It’s a breakfast that feels calm and balanced, like the first page of a well-organized notebook. The flavors are gentle, the textures soft, and the routine comforting. A sip of green tea, and the day begins. Personally, I love green tea, and the idea of something warm first thing in the morning is always welcome.

ROME
ROME

Meanwhile, in Rome, breakfast is a quick affair. Italians don’t linger over eggs and toast. Instead, they dash into a café, order a strong espresso, and nibble on a flaky pastry—perhaps a cornetto, the Italian cousin of the croissant. It’s sweet, light, and gone in minutes. But the café is buzzing with conversation, and the smell of coffee fills the air. It’s not just breakfast—it’s a ritual. This is something I have had the chance to enjoy often over the years and I must say, I like their style.

DUBAI
DUBAI

Venture a bit further to Dubai, home of our English Language School, and you might discover something more sumptuous on the menu. Chebab pancakes, golden and infused with saffron, are accompanied by date syrup and cream cheese. The flavors are vibrant, and the colors are vivid. Breakfast here is a communal affair, with laughter and stories shared as freely as the dishes themselves. I'm sad to say that I don't often spend as much time over breakfast as i'd like, but I can tell you that there are many ways to enjoy dates and if you haven't experienced dates filled with a delectable treat of some kind, then I strongly encourage you to indulge in this Arabic delicacy.

MEXICO CITY
MEXICO CITY

It's time to head to Mexico City, where breakfast might mean chilaquiles—crispy tortilla chips soaked in red or green salsa, topped with eggs, cheese, and sometimes chicken. It’s messy, spicy, and absolutely delicious. The dish wakes you up faster than any alarm clock. Though I don't typically indulge in spicy things early in the morning, I am a big fan of spicy mexican dishes generally and this definetly sounds like a must try.

LONDON
LONDON

And in London? This is something I'm very familiar with, and if you haven't experienced our traditional English breakfast, I have to ask, what are you waiting for? Commonly referred to as a 'Full English', it includes a feast of eggs, sausages, baked beans, toast, and perhaps even grilled tomatoes. It's hearty and filling, ideal for a rainy morning when you need something warm and satisfying. Let's be honest, though—Brits don't indulge in this every day; my heart and cholesterol wouldn't appreciate it. However, it's a must-have at least once when I visit family back home, and you can bet we enjoy it when staying overnight in a charming B&B above a country pub.

And while the ingredients may change from one culture to another, the feeling remains the same: breakfast is a small celebration of a new beginning, a moment to pause and savor the promise of the day ahead.

So tomorrow morning, wherever you are, take a moment to think about what’s on your plate. What does your breakfast say about you? Do you opt for something traditional from your country, if so, what does that consist of? Or perhaps, you don't have something typical of your homeland at all? Perhaps your travells have led you to new culinary delicacies. If so, we would love to hear about it. Have you tried any of the breakfasts listed above? What is the most stand out dish for you, and if you could try any breakfast in the world, which one would you choose?
