How can I encourage my child to learn English?

Getting children to learn a language can be difficult and it can be even harder if you're just learning the language yourself. Although, strength is better in numbers and with these tips, you can help to motivate each other. Read on to learn about our tips for learning English with kids.

Here at Learn English Language we believe in making English fun. Learning through play is one of the best ways to not only keep young learners motivated and engaged, but also helps them to learn quickly and to remember what they've learnt.

Tip One!

Use educational games and exercises.

At Learn English, we incorporate a variety of enjoyable and engaging games designed to enhance the language learning experience for children. One of our popular activities, 'vocabulary chains,' involves players taking turns to say a word that begins with the last letter of the previous word. This game not only helps in expanding vocabulary but also encourages quick thinking and recall, making it both fun and educational. Another game, 'phonics match,' is specifically tailored to aid with pronunciation. In this activity, children match words with their corresponding phonetic sounds, reinforcing their understanding of how letters and sounds interact in the English language. This interactive approach helps to solidify their phonetic skills in a playful manner. Additionally, we utilize 'story cubes,' which are dice with various images on each side. When rolled, children create stories based on the images that appear, enhancing their storytelling abilities and fostering creativity. This activity not only encourages imaginative thinking but also improves narrative skills and the ability to construct coherent sentences. Moreover, we believe that these games serve as an excellent method for language practice because they create a dynamic learning environment. By integrating play into the process of learning, we provide children with a visual tool that facilitates easy and clear learning.

Tip Two!

Play online games in English.

Online games are an incredibly effective and engaging method to foster learning both in the classroom environment and at home. They provide an interactive platform that can transform traditional educational approaches into dynamic experiences. We have a wide array of platforms that we are eager to share with you upon your joining, each offering unique features and benefits tailored to enhance the learning experience. These games are designed not only to be educational but also to create a sense of enjoyment and excitement among children. When children engage with these types of games, they often feel relaxed, immersed, and enthusiastic about their English language skills, allowing them to explore and learn in a stress-free environment. Your youngsters will be so engrossed in the game play that they may not even realize they are absorbing valuable knowledge and skills. This seamless integration of fun and learning is one of the most significant advantages of using online games as educational tools. Moreover, we emphasize that this approach is not limited to the confines of the classroom; it is equally important to continue fostering learning opportunities at home as well. Regardless of age or language proficiency, we shouldn't just study a language, but practice and put it into use. What better way to practice those skills than through interactive and enjoyable games that keep children motivated? So, we encourage you to jump online and let your children explore the vast world of fun and educational games available. By doing so, you will not only support their academic growth but also cultivate a love for learning that can last a lifetime.

Tip Three!

Read books in English.

We have a vast library of reading materials that we utilize in our lessons designed specifically for our young students. This extensive collection encompasses a wide range of resources, from simple letter recognition exercises that lay the foundation for literacy skills, to engaging and captivating stories that spark imagination and creativity. Our library is thoughtfully curated to ensure that it meets the diverse needs and interests of all learners, providing them with the opportunity to explore various genres and themes. In addition to offering a rich selection of texts, we also keep a record of each student's reading progress. This allows us to monitor their development closely and to move them onto the next level of reading material only when they demonstrate confidence and readiness. It is crucial to emphasize that encouraging children to not only read these books but also to comprehend and visualize the content is a fundamental aspect of their learning journey. To facilitate this, we engage students in discussions about the stories they read. We ask them to articulate what they have understood, share their personal likes and dislikes regarding the narratives, and predict what they believe will happen next to the characters. This interactive approach not only enhances their critical thinking skills but also fosters a deeper connection to the material. Moreover, we invite parents to actively participate in this process at home. We encourage you to invite your child to read aloud to you, creating a shared reading experience that can be both enjoyable and educational. During these sessions, take the time to discuss the story together. Ask open-ended questions that prompt your child to express their thoughts and feelings about the plot, characters, and themes. This practice not only reinforces reading comprehension but also nurtures a lasting love for reading. By engaging in these discussions, you help your child build confidence in their ability to analyze and interpret texts, which is an invaluable skill that will serve them well throughout their academic journey and beyond. Together, we can cultivate a generation of enthusiastic and proficient readers.

Tip Four!

Sing songs in English.

Songs are an effective and enjoyable way to practice English. They integrate vocabulary, grammar, and speaking skills, transforming language learning into a fun experience. The rhythm and melody make learning engaging, while repetition reinforces language patterns naturally. A wide variety of songs on platforms like YouTube offer numerous options for practice at home, encouraging interaction and participation. Different genres cater to various tastes, keeping children motivated. Songs are memorable, often featuring catchy tunes and silly lyrics, helping children remember words and phrases. Enjoy a sing-along session to create a positive learning environment and make learning English an exciting adventure.

Tip Five!

Use picture cards.

Finally, picture cards, commonly known as flash cards in educational settings, link images to names, enhancing memory retention through visual learning. They help create mental images that allow us to recall what we have learnt. Flash cards are particularly useful for children, combining visual and textual information to reinforce learning. For beginners with limited English skills, these cards provide context, and help them understand what they're learning without the need for complex sentences and explanations. Joining our courses gives you access to these resources and other materials, that support language learning and fluency. Flash cards are an effective tool for both teaching and personal language development.

So, what have we learnt?

The use of games and creative learning captures children's interest and motivates them to participate actively, making the learning process a more enjoyable and effective experience. Through these interactive and fun approaches, we aim to build a strong foundation in language learning that encourages lifelong curiosity and engagement with the English language. These methods target all key skill areas such as vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, spoken English and even writing skills in a way that feels less like a chore and more like an adventure.
