Summer is finally here! School is over or coming to an end, and many people are jetting off on their holidays or planning their next trip.
Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the sunshine, explore new places, and of course, learn new words in English.
Whether you're relaxing at the beach or having a picnic in the park, summer offers many opportunities to practice your English in fun and natural ways.

So, let's kick off the summer with some useful, summer-related words and phrases to help you talk about the season:

Sunny –
Meaning: When the sun is shining brightly.
Example: It's a beautiful sunny day, let's go for a walk.
Hot –
Meaning: The temperature is high.
Example: It's much too hot in Dubai during summer.
Humid –
Meaning: The air feels wet and sticky.
Example: It's very humid in this country during in summer, I much prefer a dry heat.
Heatwave –
Meaning: A period of very hot weather.
Example: Britain is experiencing a heatwave this week. There will be highs of 30 degrees Celsius every day.
Cool breeze –
Meaning: A gentle wind that feels refreshing.
Example: It's a perfect summer's day today, sunny, not too hot and a nice, cool breeze.

Sunglasses –
Definition: Glasses that protect your eyes from the sun.
Example: Do you like my new sunglasses, I bought them for my holiday next week?
Swimming costume –
Definition: Clothes you wear to swim.
Example: Don't forget to pack your swimming costume when you go on holiday.
Flip-flops –
Definition: Open sandals for hot weather.
Example: We are going for a long walk today, I don't recommend wearing your flip-flops.
Hat –
Definition: Worn to protect your head from the sun.
Example: I have to wear a hat when I'm out in the summer, otherwise I feel sick and get a headache.
Sun cream –
Definition: Lotion that protects your skin from sunburn.
Example: Make sure you put on some sun cream. It is very hot today.

Swimming –
Definition: Moving through water for fun or exercise.
Example: One of my favourite things to do in the summer is swimming.
Barbecue (BBQ) –
Definition: Cooking food outside, usually on a grill.
Example: It's a lovely, warm evening, let's have a BBQ.
Camping –
Definition: Sleeping outdoors in a tent.
Example: My family go camping every summer.
Hiking –
Definition: Walking in nature, often in the mountains or forest.
Example: We love hiking in the mountains in summer, you get a beautiful clear view of the countryside.
Travelling –
Definition: Going to new places for vacation.
Example: Travelling is my favourite hobby. I try to travel somewhere new every summer.

Here is a list of our summer recommendations for you to can enjoy, whilst studying English.

1. Go to the Beach
Many of us love going to the beach during summer, whether it's to cool down in the sea, have an evening walk on the sand or enjoy a picnic with friends. This year, when you go to the beach, try using summer vocabulary and naming the things you see, for example: waves, sand, swimming, beach volley-ball etc.
2. Have a Picnic
In Britain we love a picnic during summer. We suggest taking a picnic to the park, beach or countryside. Whilst there you can name all the items in your associated with a picnic, for example: Picnic basket, strawberries, lemonade and picnic blanket.
3. Join a Summer Camp or Class
Many English language schools offer summer camps for kids and teens and summer courses for adults. 4. Watch Summer Movies in English
Who doesn't enjoy a movie? Summer films, in particular, uplift our spirits, enhance our mood, and immerse us in the summer atmosphere. They tend to be light-hearted and fun, so what's not to like? This year, though, why not consider watching your favorite summer movies in English, so you not only have fun but you learn something too?
5. Keep a Summer Journal
We've talked about this in our blogs before, journals are a fantastic way to practice your English and remember what you have learnt in class. Summer is a great time to start this, you can write about your fun-filled days holidays and the new summer vocabulary you have learnt.
Lastly, let's explore some fun, summer idioms.
Idioms are an excellent method to speak more like a native and enhance your fluency.
“Soak up the sun” -
Meaning: Enjoy the sunshine.
Example: I could just sit here and soak up the sun all day.
“Dog days of summer”
Definition: The hottest days of the season.
Example: These are the dog days of summer.
“Catch some rays”
Definition: Spend time in the sun.
Example: Let's go to the beach and catch some rays.
“Beat the heat”
Definition: Find ways to stay cool.
Example: Shall we go for a drink in that cafe to beat the heat?
