A Day In The Life

A diary entry using the present simple, daily routines and adverbs of frequency.

The present simple is a tense we use to talk about facts and habits that happen regularly. It is also used to talk about routines that happen in the present. To use the present simple we need subject + base (infinitive) verb, for example: I play/She goes/We work.

We also use 'adverbs of frequency' to talk about how frequently we do things in the present.

Some words we use to talk about frequency are:

  • Always - meaning 100% of the time

  • Usually - meaning 90% of the time

  • Often - meaning 70% of the time

  • Sometimes - meaning 50% of the time

  • Occasionally - meaning 30% of the time

  • Hardly Ever - meaning 10 % of the time

  • Never - meaning - 0% of the time

We will include these in today's blog so you can see how to use them. The 'Adverb of frequency' should come after the subject and before the verb in a sentence.

For example: I always wake up at 9am.

Below we have a diary entry , talking about a persons typical day and routine. Try reading this a few times out loud. This will help you with fluency, sentence structure and to build your confidence with reading.

A Typical Day in my life.

Hello, my name is Rebecca, I am 32 and I work in an office. I am a personal secretary.

Every day I wake up at 8.30am, I brush my teeth and have a shower. I get dressed for work then put on my makeup and do my hair.

Then I have my breakfast. I always have yogurt with honey, a glass of water, some fruit and a cup of milky coffee. At about 9:30am, I leave for work. I take the metro to work. The journey usually takes about 30 minutes.

When I arrive at work I sometimes have a coffee and chat to my co workers. It depends on what time I arrive and what my first task of the day is. Often I just go straight to my office to start my day.

I work until about 3pm, then have a late lunch with some of my colleagues. We either have a salad or a sandwich. Occasionally we treat ourselves to a burger, but we only do that about once a month, usually on a Friday.

After lunch, I go back to work. I usually have meetings in the afternoon and have to send a few emails to my boss's clients. I hardly ever have time for a coffee and a chat with my colleagues in the afternoon. It's the busiest part of our day.

At about 6 o'clock, my day ends, so I walk to the metro station. I never take a taxi home as it's too much money. I get home around 7pm, however if I get home earlier and don't have too much work to prepare for the next day, then I relax with a book, or do some exercise. I love yoga and walking. There is a lovely park by my flat where I love to walk when I get the chance. It's best in the early evening as the temperature is cooler and it isn't very busy.

After I exercise or relax, I make dinner. I like to cook pasta. Italian food is one of my favourite cuisines, so I eat it about three times a week. I always watch TV while I eat my dinner, it helps me to relax after a hard day at work.

Before I sleep I call my friends or family to catch up. At about 11pm, I go to bed, although I don't often sleep straight away. I often read my book, but I never watch TV in bed as it makes it difficult for me to sleep. By about 11:30pm I am usually asleep and it's time to get some rest before doing it all again the next day.
